Having worked as an assignment editor with ABC News in Albany, NY for over a year I can tell you, media relations folks make a LOT of mistakes when pitching their stories. Looking to step your game up? Here are my top 5 tips for what you need to do to get that story covered.

Amen on #3. As a producer I can’t tell you how many times I threw away press releases because I had no frame of reference. I was more likely to cover your event if you called first, then sent your release as you suggested.
Love #4 as well. I’ve tried that trick a couple times now that I’m out of news, and the stations totally dig it.
Great vlog! I love it! You’re inspiring me to start vlogging myself!
Thanks so much for the great information. It’s extremely helpful. I’d love more on “lingo” if you get a chance.
This is absolutely great. Definitely had to tweet this. Great job can’t wait for more.
Thanks so much- this is great. And thanks in advance for the video on TV news lingo.
Hi, great tips except you didn’t include one of the most important ones…make sure the story has a solid “local” angle.
Sande,
Great tip! You’re right, I should have mentioned that. Without a local angle there is no way your story will get picked up.

Hi Seth, it’s having been in the TV biz for 20 years and in PR for many also….;-)
would love to see one of the “Lingo” you mentioned!

The lingo video is up and you can watch it here http://sethodell.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/breaking-down-assignment-editor-lingo/

Great tips, thanks! I found other info that suggested sending the press release first and then calling, but your suggestion makes more sense. I think I’m actually responding to your previous “5 tips” vidblog. Oops.
